The invention provides a solid oxide fuel cell device and a fuel cell system incorporating a plurality of the fuel devices, each device including an elongate substrate having a reaction zone in a first portion of the length for heating to an operating reaction temperature and at least one cold zone in a second portion of the length that remains at a low temperature below the operating reaction temperature when the reaction zone is heated. In one embodiment, an electrolyte is disposed between an anode and a cathode in the reaction zone, and the anode and cathode each have an electrical pathway extending to an exterior surface of the at least one cold zone for electrical connection at low temperature. According to another embodiment, the length of the elongate substrate is the greatest dimension such that the elongate substrate has a coefficient of thermal expansion having only one dominant axis that is coextensive with the length. According to yet another embodiment, fuel and/or air supplies are coupled to the device at a cold end for supplying fuel and/or air to passages within the elongate substrate. The system of the invention further includes a plurality of the devices positioned with their first portions in a hot zone chamber and their cold zones extending outside the hot zone chamber. A heat source is coupled to the hot zone chamber to heat the reaction zones to the operating reaction temperature. According to one embodiement, electrical connections are made to the anodes and cathodes in the cold zones. Methods of use and methods of making are further provided.
L'invention concerne un dispositif de pile à combustible à oxyde solide, et un système de pile à combustible comprenant une pluralité de tels dispositifs, chaque dispositif comprenant un substrat allongé présentant une zone de réaction dans une première portion de sa longueur, pour le chauffage à une température de réaction de fonctionnement, et au moins une zone froide dans une seconde portion de sa longueur qui demeure à basse température, au-dessous de la température de réaction de fonctionnement lorsque la zone de réaction est chauffée. Dans une forme d'exécution, un électrolyte est disposé entre une anode et une cathode dans la zone de réaction, l'anode et la cathode ayant chacune un parcours électrique s'étendant vers une surface extérieure d'au moins une zone froide, pour la connexion électrique à basse température. Conformément à une autre forme d'exécution, la longueur du substrat allongé est la dimension maximale, telle que ledit substrat allongé présente un coefficient de dilatation thermique ayant uniquement un axe dominant qui est coextensif avec la longueur. Conformément à une autre forme d'exécution, les alimentations en combustible et/ou air sont couplées au dispositif à une extrémité froide d'alimentation en combustible et/ou air, à des passages à l'intérieur du substrat allongé. Le système selon l'invention comprend en outre une pluralité de dispositifs positionnés, par leurs premières portions, dans une chambre à zone chaude, leurs zones froides s'étendant à l'extérieur de la chambre à zone chaude. Une source chaude est couplée à la chambre à zone chaude, en vue de porter les zones de réaction à la température de réaction de fonctionnement. Conformément à une forme d'exécution, des connexions électriques sont prévues aux anodes et aux cathodes dans les zones froides. L'invention concerne en outre des procédé d'utilisation et des procédés de fabrication.
