A solid oxide fuel cell stack may include a horizontal tap compression plate, a vertical fuel intake face, a vertical fuel exhaust face, a vertical air intake face, a vertical air exhaust face and a horizontal bottom compression plate and a shell covering each of the vertical intake and exhaust faces. The shells are retained by retention bars which are interconnected circumferentially around the fuel cell stack.
