Two solid state laser structures are provided which are optimized for multimode operation. The first laser structure has a plurality of normal incidence optically transmissive surfaces in the laser cavity (11, 12). The most reflective one of those normal incidence surfaces (18) is disposed at the optical center (16) of the laser cavity (11, 12). The gain medium (20) is centered in the subcavity (11, 18) defined by a cavity mirror and the optical center (16). In the second laser structure, there are no normal incidence surfaces in the laser cavity (31, 32), and the gain medium (30) is disposed at the optical center (36) of the laser cavity (31, 32). The laser structures are employed to construct erbium glass lasers which are not only optimized from multimode operation but also have effective cooling of the gain medium (30) and minimized thermal lensing effect.
L'invention porte sur deux lasers à solide optimisés en vue d'un fonctionnement multimode. La première structure laser comporte, dans la cavité du laser (11, 12), plusieurs surfaces à transmissivité optique à incidence normale. La plus réflechissante de ces surfaces à incidence normale (18) est installée dans le centre optique (16) de la cavité du laser (11, 12). Le milieu de gain (20) est centré dans la sous-cavité (11, 18) délimitée par un miroir de cavité et le centre optique (16). La cavité du laser (31, 32) de la seconde structure laser ne comporte pas de surfaces à incidence normale et le milieu de gain (30) est installé dans le centre optique (36) de la cavité du laser (31, 32). On emploie ces structures laser pour construire des lasers à verre dopés à l'erbium qui non seulement sont optimisés en vue d'un fonctionnement multimode, mais bénéficient également d'un refroidissement efficace du milieu de gain (30) et ont un effet thermique de lentille minimisé.
