ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention concerns a method of and a sensor for detecting the activity of gaseous anhydrides in an oxygen-bearing gas. It comprises a solid state electrolyte element having oxy- anions of the element forming the anhydride to be detected, a re- ference electrode being in contact with the electrolyte element, a detection electrode remote from the reference electrode and also in contact with the electrolyte element. A metal salt material is placed nearby the reference electrode, that metal salt being se- lected such that it evolves an anhydride gas identical to the an- hydride to be detected. The electrolyte and detection electrode are arranged such that they are free to come into contact with the gaseous anhydride to be detected whereas the reference and detection electrodes are arranged such that a difference of poten- tial occurs therebetween when a sample of the anhydride to be detected is contacted with the detection electrode and with the electrolyte element. The electrolyte element and the metal salt material are heated to a temperature such that a logarithmic va- riation in the concentration of the anhydride to be detected causes a proportional and substantially linear variation in the difference of potential, that temperature being below the fusion temperature of said electrolyte element. A potentiometric measurement device is connected to the electrodes for measuring the activity of the anhydride to be detected by measuring the set difference of potential.
