A spectrofluorimeter uses a triggered xenon flash tube (14) which is powered with a capacitor store and controlled by program instructions form a microcontroller. The spectrofluorimeter uses an optical cell (12) having a configuration in which the xenon flash tube (14) is placed in spaced relation to a pair of signal detectors (17, 19) and a reference detector (21). The spaced relation of these components allows the use of solid state detectors (17, 19, 21) in the spectroflu- orimeter. Electrical isolation of the detec- tor amplifiers is provided during all periods except for the actual detection portion flash cycle using the microcontroller. The spec- trofluorimeter has a solid state detection ca- pability that can be used effectively for the detection of visible wavelengths using com- mercially available fluorophores.
