Abstract A process for the solubilisation and/or hydrolysis of a cellulose-containing material wherein the material is con- tacted with hydrogen chloride, water and calcium chloride to produce a reaction mixture of specified composition. Preferably the process is used to convert wood pulp or paper into syrups containing glucose.
