This invention relates to low melting solvated mesophase pitches which are suitable for spinning into carbon fibers. The solvated mesophase pitches have a lower melting point than conventional mesophase pitch but remain substantially anisotropic. The solvated mesophase can be produced as an intermediate during solvent fractionation or supercritical solvent fractionation of mesogen-containing isotropic pitches. The process is enhanced through the ability to recover pseudomesogens with an increased average molecular weight which, in combination with the solvent content, provides a fusible mesophase capable of being spun directly into infusible oriented anisotropic carbon fibers.

Cette invention se rapporte à des brais à mésophase solvatée et à bas point de fusion, qui conviennent au filage sous forme de fibres de carbone. Les brais à mésophage solvatée présentent un point de fusion inférieur à celui d'un brai à mésophase classique, mais demeurent sensiblement anisotropes. La mésophase solvatée peut être produite sous forme d'un intermédiaire au cours du fractionnement par solvant ou du fractionnement par solvant surcritique de brais isotropes contenant du mésogène. Le procédé est amélioré en ce qu'il est possible de récupérer des pseudo-mésogènes d'un poids meléculaire moyen accru, et qui, en combinaison avec la teneur en solvant, produisent une mésophase fusible pouvant être directement filée sous forme de fibres de carbones anisotropes orientées et infusibles.
