Known synthetic materials have limitations and disadvantages such as a limited range of physical and biochemical properties. The present disclosure teaches a microbially-derived implantable cellulose, wherein the material is capable of in vivo implantation. The method for producing the same is also described. The method may include: treating the material to render the cellulose non-pyrogenic; dehydrating the material in a continuous manner by applying a water-miscible organic solvent; and subsequently removing the solvent. The material can be used as a tissue substitute, bulking agent and a surgical mesh. The microbially-derived implantable cellulose may also be capable of in vivo implantation, and may have desirable mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation and sutureability. The microbially-derived cellulose may also be non-pyrogenic and biocompatible and may be capable of being sterilized.
