SOLVENT EXCHANGE PROCEDURE FOR PREPARING DIAMINOPHENYLINDANE Abstract of the Disclosure After a mixture of 5(6)-nitro-1-(4'-nitrophenyl)-1,3,3-trimethyl- indane is prepared in methylene chloride, water is charged to the solution and methylene chloride is azeotropically distilled. The dinitrophenylindane is then reduced with iron via a Béchamp reduction to give a mixture of 5(6)-amino-1-(4'-aminophenyl)-1,3,3 trimethyl- indane. This diamine is useful as a curing agent for epoxy resins and as an intermediate in making polyimides with good high temperature proper- ties.
