ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Hydrocarbons are recovered from bituminous sand containing more than 0.1 weight percent water by reducing the concentration of water to less than 0.1 weight percent in the sand by heat treatment and then extracting bitumen from the sand with a bitumen solvent containing a ketone, preferably a mixture of acetone and a higher ketone. A liquid hydrocarbon component may also be included in the bitumen solvent.
