ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This disclosure describes apparatus for generating electrical signals which simu- late the signals actually use by most sonar systems to indicate direction from with the sounds are received. In many passive sonar systems, arrays of hydrophones receive underwater signals from a number of sources. To indicate the direction of the sources from the receivers, the signals are manipulated so that they form, in effect, an axis along which the source of maximum amplitude lies. The equipment for performing this operation is contained in most sonar systems, and the simulation of such equipment is an expensive one. Therefore, this apparatus operates under the control of a simulation computer to generate signals which have the direction characteristics of signals received by hydrophone arrays and which have been formed into two theoretical beams, one of each side of the axis of maximum amplitude. The apparatus of this invention includes beamformers for each of the sound sources to be simulated, all under the control of the computer.
