Abstract Accurate tuning of a high power, low frequency flextensional transducer for underwater use is made possible by inserting the piezo-electric elements of the transducer in a number of spaced stacks (22,23,24) between opposed inserts (28) which make easy adjustment during assembly possible. The stacks are placed on the plane through the major axis of the elliptical shell (21) of the transducer and the inserts (28) are shaped to conform with the elliptical shape. The stacks are assembled with tapered supports (29') and complementary tapered slides (210) are wedged between the shell inserts (28) and the tapered supports (29') until a required pre-stress is exerted by the shell on the piezo-electric stacks. Sealing of the ends of the elliptical shell (11) to respective end-plates (16) so as to retain a capability for high amplitude flexing is achieved by use of a compression bonded layer (31) of neoprene which provides a peripheral lip seal (32). Wide-band performance of the transducer may be achieved by changing the cross section of the inserts (28) along the length of the shell (21) so that the length of insert in contact with the shell changes. In addition, the depth range of the transducer may be extended by use of depth pressure compensation.
