The apparatus preferably comprises a DRAM (115), a DRAM address counter (210), a loop counter (220), an address stack (215), an instruction decoder (200), and a data output interface (40). For the SONET signal generating apparatus (75), the DRAM (115) stores a plurality of data words at a respective plurality of memory locations. Each data word is preferably comprised of three bytes of SONET data and a command byte. The command byte of a plurality of data words generates a plurality of program sequences (routines) which are typically repeated a plurality of times.
