ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A sonobuoy consists of a buoy which floats on the sea surface and a sensor, including a hydrophone, which is submerged at a desired sea depth. The sensor is maintained at the desired sea depth by making it neutrally buoyant at this depth. A signal transmission line which extends between the sensor and the buoy for transmitting signals therebetween has no tension therein, so that the sensor is not influenced by movements of the buoy and provides a high signal-to-noise ratio. The signal transmission line can be a fine optical fiber a great length of which can be accommodated in a small volume, enabling the sensor to be used at great sea depths.
