ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification describes a sorter comprising an elongated bed inclined downwardly to one side, a plurality of belts movable along the bed, and diverter means on the bed comprising a plurality of diverter fingers rockable on a common pivot axis below the surface of the bad and in a plane parallel thereto, the axis being inclined with respect to the path of the belts so as to extend upwardly and rearwardly, the diverter fingers extending downstream therefrom parallel to the belts, and means for moving the fingers between a first position in which the fingers are substantially flush with the bed and a diverging position in which the fingers are inclined upwardly from the bed so as to deflect an article being carried by the belts laterally off the bed.
