To sort articles on the basis of measurement data concerning the articles, the measurement data from a large random sample are organised in a library according to frequency (1) of the occurrence of measurement data combinations. A sort criterion is allocated to the measurement data combinations, depending on their frequency. The sorting operation involves recording the measurement data of articles and verifying the frequency which they can be allocated in the library. It is on this basis that the corresponding sort criterion is applied to the articles. The method allows fast sorting in spite of a large number of measured values for the individual articles.
