An attenuator (10) for reducing sound in an HVAC system (13) has an inlet mouth (45) and a tube (67) downstream of the inlet mouth (45). In the improvement, the inlet mouth (45) defines a surface of revolution (45a) formed by rotating a segment of an ellipse about the attenuator long axis (57) and at a fixed distance therefrom. The new attenuator (10) has an air flow transition chamber (39) which permits air flow to "normalize" after air enters the attenuator (10) at its inlet end (23) but before such air enters the inlet mouth (45). The attenuator (10) also has a baffle (79) between the entry portion (43) and the outlet end (29) and positioned to occlude the enclosed cavity (75) between the interior tube (67) and the outer housing (37). The attenuator (10) thereby more effectively attenuates sound in the third octave band. Optionally, the attenuator (10) (either alone or in combination with a VAV terminal unit (11)) has exterior insulation (85) for preventing moisture condensation and further reducing objectionable sound.
