Expandable sealant and baffle compositions and methods of forming and using such compositions are provided. The compositions comprise a first thermoplastic resin, an epoxy resin, preferably a different second thermoplastic resin, and optionally a compound selected from the group of pigments, blowing agents, catalysts, curing agents, reinforcers or mixtures thereof. The compositions are heat-expanded into lightweight, high strength bodies for sealing hollow structural members of vehicles and decrease the noise of the members. In a preferred embodiment, the first thermoplastic resin is an SBS block co- polymer, the epoxy resin is a bisphenol-A based liquid epoxy resin, the second thermoplastic resin is a polystyrene, and the reinforcer is hydrated amorphous silica. The compositions are formed on apparatus (10) which comprises a U-shaped member (12) which comprises leg portions (22 and 24), base portion (20), base section (34) and leg sections (36 and 38) all of which can be supported on lattice-type nylon supports.
L'invention concerne des compositions expansibles d'étanchéité et de déflexion et les procédés pour les élaborer et les utiliser. Les compositions contiennent une première résine thermoplastique, une résine époxyde, de préférence une seconde résine thermoplastique, et, éventuellement, un composé sélectionné parmi des pigments, des agents d'expansion, des catalyseurs, des agents réactifs, des agents renforçateurs ou des mélanges de ces derniers. Les compositions sont expansibles sous l'effet de la chaleur et sont transformées en des corps légers et très résistants destinés à l'obturation d'éléments structuraux creux de véhicules et à la réduction du bruit de ces éléments. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, la première résine thermoplastique est un copolymère bloc de SBS, la résine époxyde est une résine époxyde liquide à base de bisphénol A, la seconde résine thermoplastique est un polystyrène, et l'agent renforçateur est constitué de silice amorphe hydratée. Les compositions sont élaborées sur un appareil (10) comportant un élément (12) en forme de U constitué de deux branches (22 et 24), d'une partie base (20), d'une section de base (34), de deux sections de branche (36 et 38), tous ces éléments s'appuyant sur des supports nylon de type réseau.
