ABSTRACT A space heater method and apparatus for burning gaseous fuels which comprises introducing the gaseous fuel to a swirling flow of air at low pressure in a combustion chamber at an equivalent ratio of stoichiometric air to actual air supplied within the range of from 0.5 to 0.6, burning said fuel- air mixture in the combustion chamber and discharging the combustion products from the combustion chamber axially into an annular flow of air. The apparatus comprises an outer tubular casing coaxial with an inner tubular casing defining an annulus between the two casings, means for directing combustion air axially into the outer tubular casing with division of a portion of the air flow into the inner tubular casing for combustion and the remainder of the air through the annulus, swirler means disposed within the inner tubular casing for swirling the combustion air without substantial increase in air pressure through the combustion chamber for combustion of gaseous fuel therein and recombination of the combustion products with the annular flow of air. The swirler means comprises a revolving blade having a pitch of from about 35 to about 45 at the leading edge, preferably about 40, increasing to from about 85 to 95 at the trailing edge, preferably about 90.
