RCA 80,495 SPACECRAFT STRUCTURE Abstract of the Disclosure A construction suitable for use in a spacecraft includes a tubular circular cylindrical member, an attached frustro-conical member and attached annular stiffening rings. The members and rings are formed of a metal matrix composite material, such as SiC/Al. The combined cylindrical member and conical member structure has a tapered wall thickness which reaches a maximum value at the point nearest the frustro-conical member edge, at which the construction is attached to its launch vehicle. The construction is quasi-isotropic, has a homogeneous microstructure, is low in weight, high in strength and stiffness, and is thermally stable with minimum distortion due to exposure to thermal cycling.
