ABSTRACT A spark plug, in accordance with the invention, comprises a shell, a central electrode, an insulator surrounding the central electrode, and a ground electrode having one end secured to the shell and another end which extends beneath and is spaced from the bottom end of the central electrode. In the general area at the bottom end of the central electrode, the ground electrode is longitudinally defined, in relation to the spark plug, by an inwardly facing surface, nearest the bottom of the central electrode, and an outwardly facing surface. According to the invention, the inwardly facing surface of the ground electrode is larger than its outwardly facing surface and both surfaces are flat. The spark plug exhibits a prolonged life period with respect to prior art spark plugs.
