An adaptive technique for video encoding and decoding which facilitates the transmission, reception, storage, or retrieval of a scalable video signal. The invention allows this scaling to be performed in both the spatial and frequency domains. In a specific embodiment of the invention, video encoding is adaptively performed based upon a selection from among a multiplicity of compatible spatial-domain predictions from previously decoded images, and a selection of compatible predictions obtained from up-sampling decoded lower resolution images. The decoded lower resolution images correspond to a current temporal reference, and at least one of these lower resolution images is encoded in more than one frequency domain scales. In yet another embodiment of the invention, one lower resolution signal is encoded (without reference to any other low resolution signal) by employing the MPEG-1 standard, with a modified partitioning of the resultant bistream into two or more frequency scale bitstreams. The decoded images from these bitstreams are employed in the spatial prediction of a higher resolution layers.
L'invention est une méthode adaptative de codage et de décodage vidéo qui facilite la transmission, la réception, le stockage ou l'extraction de signaux vidéo à configurations variables. L'invention permet d'effectuer ces variations de configurations dans les domaines spatial et fréquentiel. Dans une concrétisation particulière de l'invention, le codage vidéo est effectué de façon adaptative selon une sélection effectuée parmi une multiplicité de prévisions spatiales compatibles obtenues d'images à définition inférieure codées antérieurement et une sélection de prévisions compatibles obtenue d'un suréchantillonnage d'images décodées à définition inférieure. Ces images sont la référence temporaire du moment et l'une d'elles au moins est codée dans plus d'une échelle de fréquences. Dans une autre concrétisation de l'invention, un signal à définition inférieure est codé (sans référence à aucun autre signal à définition inférieure) selon la norme MPEG-1 avec une segmentation modifiée du train binaire résultant en deux trains binaires ou plus pour l'échelle des fréquences. Les images décodées obtenues de ces trains binaires sont utilisées dans la prévision spatiale des couches à définition plus élevée.
