An articulated spatial coordinate measuring arm useful, for example, for measuring three dimensional objects. The arm avoids problems of delay and inconvenience to the user by providing a supporting base, proximal intermediate and distal transfer members and a probe that each have a proximal end and a distal end. First, second, third and fourth joint assemblies swivelingly connect the proximal end of the proximal member to the base, the distal end of the proximal member to the proximal end of the intermediate member, the distal end of the intermediate member to the proximal end of the distal member, and the proximal end of the probe to the distal end of the distal member, respectively. One or more of the first, second and third joint assemblies each comprise at least one multi- contact slip-ring sub-assembly that transmits signals through it. Two or more of the first, second and third joint assemblies each have an unlimited range of swiveling motion.
