Apparatus for transporting and transferring materials, such as laboratory specimens, between at least first and second vertically spaced levels includes a material carrier assembly with an endless belt which is moved to load and unload materials onto the assembly. A motor drive is located at each loading and/or unloading level to operate the endless belt, thus removing the requirement for cables or other electrical connections to be provided to the carrier assembly. A material transport system includes at least two horizontal transport devices at different vertical levels interconnected by the apparatus for transporting and transferring materials between the two transport devices.
