ABSTRACT In measuring tack two specimens are brought into abut- ting contact under a predetermined load, after which the contact is maintained momentarily; the specimens are then separated within a second time interval; a load cell measures the force as a function of time and the tack is measured in terms of velocity times the force integrated over the second time interval; in one embodiment a specimen holder for the test includes a first member with an upper portion and a lower pair of abutments, an arcuately shaped second member mounted on the first member for limited rectilinear movement thereon, the arcuate member having an arcuately shaped lower surface where spaced portions contact the spaced abutments, biasing means interconnected between the first and second member for biasing the arcuate member into abutting contact with the abutments, and lever means operative between the first and said second members for separating the spacing between the arcuate shaped lower surface and the spaced abutments to facilitate the locating of a sample thereon; in another embodiment the specimen holder includes support means having an annular member mounted thereon, thrust bearing means mounted in a central aperture of the annular member, a specimen support member cooperating with the thrust bearing means for supporting a specimen thereon, the annular member being threaded, a ring member being internally threaded for attachment to the annular member, the ring member having a reduced upper inner portion for cooperative engagement of a specimen supported by the specimen support member.
