In an optical spectrum analyzer (1), the respective wavelength bandwidths (.DELTA..lambda. , OS1, .DELTA..lambda.OS2, ...., .DELTA..lambda.OSn) of the optical spectrum analyzer (1) are determined at the wavelengths (.lambda.R1, .lambda.R2, ..., .lambda.Rn) of the reference lines and used as calibration data for determining measurement tolerances by means of reference lines of known wavelength (.lambda.R1 , .lambda.R2 , ..., .lambda.Rn) and known wavelength bandwidths (.DELTA..lambda.R1, .DELTA..lambda.R2, ...., .DELTA..lambda.Rn) from the known wavelength bandwidths (.DELTA..lambda.R1 , .DELTA..lambda..R2 , ...., .DELTA..lambda..Rn) of the reference lines and from the wavelength bandwidths (.DELTA..lambda.M1 , .DELTA..lambda..M2 , ...., .DELTA..lambda.Mn) of the reference lines measured with the optical spectrum analyzer (1).
