A speech-responsive voice messaging system provides a hierarchically-simple speech user interface (UI) that enables subscribers to specify mailboxes, passwords and the like by spoken word. Results are recognized as good, bad or question- able according to a set of quality thresholds. Based upon the outcome of the quality evaluation, a caller is navigated through speech UI menus. In response to repeated failures of recognition, the system automatically transfers to a DTMF UI. The speech and DTMF UIs overlay each other seamlessly for utilization of desired functions in response to mapping of candidate results.
