Speed and Angle Timing Measurement Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatus for determining the speed of an engine and the phase shift between first and second shafts rotatably driven by the engine. First and second fixed magnetic sensors generate first and second signals in response to movement of magnetically sensible members through circular paths at speeds proportional to the speeds of the first and second shafts, respectively. Clock pulses from a fixed frequency clock are counted to obtain a first count between successive first signals and a second count between successive second and first signals. The first count is inverted to obtain information as to the instantaneous engine speed. The second count is divided by the first count to obtain information as to the instantaneous phase angle between the first and second shafts. Successive instantaneous information is averaged to cancel the effects of engine torsionals. The present invention is particularly useful in engine control systems requiring rapid updating of information as to the speed and timing advance angle of the engine.
