SPEED NUT ABSTRACT A threaded nut assembly that can be positioned quickly on a threaded bolt and which selectively engages the threads thereof. The assembly includes both a nut casing and a jam nut means consisting of jam nut segments that include arcuate faces wherein thread sections are formed. The nut casing interior includes an inclined surface that supports, in sliding engagement, the threaded jam nut segments that move thereon to contact edges of arcuate faces thereof forming a hole or opening therethrough, the threaded sections forming a continuous thread. The inclined surface and the jam nut means face in contact therewith are angled at the same angle from the vertical, which angle is preferably the thread angle. The movement of the jam nut means therefor expands or contracts the distance between the thread sections to engage and disengage from the threads of the bolt over the entire thread length and a spring biasing is provided to urge the segments toward one another. In the engaged position, the nut may be tightened into locking position by a conventional rotational motion.
