Abstract The invention relates to highly monodispersed non- porous spherical SiO2 particles having mean particle diameters between 0.05 and 10 µm with a standard deviation of not more than 5% and also to a method for the prepar- ation of such particles by hydrolytic polycondensation of tetraalkoxysilanes in aqueous/alcoholic ammoniacal medium, a sol of primary particles first being prepared and the SiO2 particles then being converted to the desired par- ticle size by a continuous measured addition of tetraal- koxysilane controlled by the extent of the reaction, and also to the use of such SiO2 particles as sorption material in chromatography.
