A B S T R A C T A spiking device for pin-setting units in bowling alleys is used to lock the ropes of individual pins when these are not to be lowered onto the floor of the unit. The device is accommodated in the two halves of a housing and contains an electromagnet, the armature of which is connected, by means of an articulated connecting rod, to a rope-clamping shoe. The rope-deflecting roller drives, through a pinion, a gearwheel which, by means of a slip clutch, pivots an arm carrying a magnet co-operating with a switch. The design permits spiking devices of this kind to be made compact and inexpensive.
