A coating apparatus includes a rotary cup (12) for forming beads (14) and projecting them radially outwardly, and one or more collection basins (16) surrounding the bead forming cup (12). The cup (12) is adjustably rotatable about its central axis, and the collection basins (16) are independently rotatable and positioned to collect the beads (14) projected from the cup (12). The coating apparatus further includes an elevation adjustment system for axially adjusting the alignment of the cup (12) with respect to the selected collection basins (16). The rotational speeds of the cup (12) and the collection basins (16) are selected so as to minimize the impact of the beads (14) against a gelling solution (24) in the collection basins (16).
