2129840 9316651 PCTABS00025 A spinal fixation system (20) includes a relatively rigid fixation plate (21) which is engaged to a plurality of vertebrae by bone fasteners. The plate includes a longitudinal slot (22) with an arrangement of scallops (29) formed at the upper and lower edges of the slot. The scallop arrangement (29) includes a first set of scallops (30) formed at one spherical radius R2 and a second set of scallops (31) at a smaller radius R1 nested within the first scallops. Thus, the fixation plate can accommodate bone fasteners or load transmitting components having curved engagement surfaces of various diameters and providing varying degrees of rigidity. In another feature of the invention, a C-shaped ring (41) is provided which encircles the plate (21) to entrap the side walls (21a) of the plate, thereby restricting the plate walls from spreading as the bone screws or bolts are tightened onto the plate.
