A spinal rod connection system includes a first rod (12) for attachment to the spinal column and a second rod (30) attachment to the skull releasably engaged to one another in end-to-end fashion by a coupling mechanism (28) wherein the angle between the longitudinal axis of each of said first and second rods is variable (Fig.5). In another embodiment the coupling mechanism is such that the logitudinal axis of each of said first and second rods is at an angle to one another (1).
