A mandrel/spindle disc for a continuous motion can decorator includes a plurality of relatively lightweight mandrel assemblies (20) mounted on a rotating carrier (18) with equal angular spacings between adjacent assemblies. The subassemblies rotate radially. Each assembly includes a base (41) and two guide rods (51, 52) that extend radially inward from the base and are received by sleeve bushings (71, 72) that are disposed in radial holes (73, 74) extending inward from the carrier periphery. Vacuum and air pressure are fed to each mandrel assembly (20) through a flexible hose (101) having a large loop therein. The base (41) of the assembly is made compact so that when decorations are being applied to a particular can the mandrel supporting that can moves relatively close to the radially outward end of the bushings (71, 72). These bushings extend radially outward of the carrier periphery, being received by undercuts (99) in washer like retainers (80).
