13 SPINEL-CARBON REFRACTORY ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The problems associated with the low thermal shock resistance of conventional refractories utilized in continuous casting operations are overcome by a spinel-carbon refractory which provides improved thermal shock resistance. The spinel-carbon refractory of the present invention includes either a sintered spinel, a fused spinel, or a mixture of sintered and fused spinel in combination with a source of carbon, such as flake graphite. Spinel (magnesium aluminate, MgO.Al2O4) imparts into the resultant refractory a lower overall thermal expansion which improves the thermal shock resistance of the shape. Minor additions of alumina, magnesite, zirconia or combinations of these materials can be added to the spinel based mix of the present invention without significantly compromising the overall decrease in thermal expansion of the base mix. Additionally, metallic additions, such as aluminum, silicon, magnesium, or various alloy mixtures can be added to the base mix to enhance oxidation resistance and hot strength. It is believed that magnesia-enriched spinel, stoichiometric spinel (72 wt. % alumina and 28 wt. % magnesia), and alumina rich spinel can be used with equal or near equal results. The spinel grain used in the spinel-carbon refractory of the present invention should be free of impurities, that is, it should contain less than 1 wt. % lime and less than 2 wt. % silica.
