ABSTRACT A spinel-forming composition in the ternary system MgO-Al2O3-Cr2O3, which is characterized in that it is in the ternary system within the limits A'-A"-B"-B', wherein A'=53% by weight MgO, 44% by weight Al2O3 and 3% by weight Cr2O3; A"=21% by weight MgO, 76% by weight Al2O3 and 3% by weight Cr2O3; B"=19.5% by weight MgO, 60.5% by weight Al2O3 and 20% by weight Cr2O3; and B'=49% by weight MgO, 31% by weight Al2O3 and 20% by weight Cr2O3. An aspect of the invention is the use thereof as an additive to magnesia bricks.
