-42- Abstract of the Disclosure A spinner transducer tool includes a shaft that is circum- ferentially magnetically coded in two sets of magnetic keys. A core is equipped with an exciter coil and two pickup coils, and is disposed adjacent the magnetic keys of the shaft. As the shaft rotates, the keys in each set pass by the core and coil arrangement. An alternating current signal is impressed on the exciter coil, and generates alternating magnetic fields through each of the pickup coils. As the keys in one set pass by the magnetic circuit associated with one pickup coil, the flux linkage through that circuit is alternately opened and closed. The resulting amplitude modulation of the magnetic field through the pickup coil may be detected and measured to determine rate of shaft rotation. Measured, mutual circum- ferential displacement of the two sets of magnetic keys permits analysis of the two amplitude modulated data signals from the pickup coils to determine both the rate and direction of rotation of the shaft. The spinner transducer tool shaft may be an impeller shaft in a fluid flow measuring device.
