A B S T R A C T Acrylic fibers of improved hygroscopicity are obtain- ed by preparing a spinning composition of a copolymer containing at least 50 weight percent acrylonitrile, at least 5 weight per- cent of a monomer containing a hydrophilic group, and at least 2 weight percent of a monomer containing a cross-linkable group, by spinning the composition into fiber, and by cross-linking the fiber thus obtained.
