There is disclosed herein a bipolar fetal monitoring electrode having a body, a spiral electrode terminating in a point for engaging the fetal scalp and a reference electrode insulated from the spiral electrode. Each electrode being connected to a separate insulated wire. The face end of the electrode from which the spiral electrode extends has a recessed spiral groove running under and following the spiral electrode. The spiral electrode exits the electrode body at right angles to the shoulder at the deepest end of the groove, this provides a positive stop when the electrode is applied to the fetal scalp. There is space under the spiral electrode at this point which prevents any jamming of fetal tissue or hair. The depth of the spiral groove decreases at a greater rate than the lead of the spiral, allowing the spiral electrode and groove bottom to come in close proximity with one another where the spiral electrode rises above the face end of the body. The controlled force applied to the scalp by the spiral electrode and groove, as the scalp slides between the two surfaces, reduces the tendency of the electrode to fall off during the monitoring procedure. The recessed portion of the spiral electrode forms part of the electrodes active surface area therefore minimizing the height of electrode required projecting above the body's face. Thus a reduced hazard is present to physician and mother during application or to the fetus if the spiral electrode is deformed.
