ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A spiral type one-way clutching mechanism is provided herein which is insensitive to transverse forces; substantially eliminates over- running frictional wear on the critically shaped surfaces of its members; and substantially eliminates the role of chance in establishing the clutching load distribution between its members. The spiral one-way clutching mechanism is also provided as a spiral type one-way clutch assembly whereby the clutching mode may be active or passive. The clutch- mechanism utilized a monolithic annular outer body member having an inner spiral surface having at least one spiral segment defining an axially oriented opening through the body member. A monolithic annular inner body member is concentrically positioned in the axially oriented opening and has an outer spiral surface having at least one spiral segment which is tangentially congruent to the spiral surface of the outer body member, the congruent inner and outer spiral surfaces defining a spiral race there- between. One end of the spiral race is defined in part by the outer spiral surface having an inner abutment provided by a radially outwardly extending protrusion or flange on the inner body member, the other end of the spiral race defined in part by the inner spiral surface having an outer abutment provided by a radially inwardly directed protrusion on the outer body member. At least one of the body members has a radially directed expansion slit extending therethrough and at least one limit spring acts between the body members. The outer body member and the inner body member are relatively rotatably oscillatable with respect to each other. A plurality of axially oriented, abutting roller members is posi- tioned in the spiral race substantially, but not completely filling, the spiral race, each such member being in contact with the inner and the outer spiral surfaces. Limit spring means are provided which act between the body members for limiting the relative oscillatory movement there- between.
