SPLINED SHAFT DRIVING ARRANGEMENT ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE One embodiment of the invention includes a pump unit the housing of which contains impeller means the drive shaft of which extends therefrom through a wall section of the housing and a coupling adapter for mounting in connection with the drive shaft of any one of a variety of engines which may be connected to power the impeller. The adapter and the impeller drive shaft are arranged to include portions providing for a slip type male-female interfit to effect their connection in a manner to inhibit relative rotary motion therebetween. The interfitting portions are constructed to accommodate a storage of lubricant for maintaining the operative condition of these parts. The coupling is so provided between the pump and an engine as to facilitate their quick and true connection in the field and insure an optimal driving- driven relation between the parts. A further embodiment features shaft support means which hold the impeller shaft on center during an axial advance thereof to achieve the drive coupling. Another embodiment provides an adapter facilitating the coupling of a pump, the impeller of which has an externally projected drive shaft, to any one of a variety of engines the drive shaft of which embodies a flywheel. The adapter comprises a hub-like device the base end of Docket No. 8087 ABSTRACT (continued) which is adapted for a fixed connection thereof to an engine flywheel and the opposite end of which defines a socket embodying means for a slip fit and bearing connection thereof with an impeller drive shaft the form of which inhibits relative rotary motion there- between. The hub-like device also includes means for loading thereof with lubricant and means for escape therefrom of excess lubricant the form and arrangement of which inhibits escape of lubricant when the hub is coupled to an impeller shaft and rotating.
