An article carrier (10) for mounting to a vehicle body panel is formed by a crossbar (40, 42) connecting longitudinal rails (14, 16). The crossbar (40, 42) is made of a cross rail (48) and stanchions (44, 46) which support the cross rail (48) for displacement along and locking engagement with the longitudinal rails (14, 16). The split stanchions (44, 46) are formed of first and second jaw member (64, 66), and one of the jaw members is carried by a shelf on the other jaw member and displaced along the shelf by a retainer (68). The retainer (68) is manipulated by an actuator (70), preferably in the form of a rotary knob (76) which is selectively engageable with a nut (78). The nut is threadably engaged on a threaded shaft that is engaged in an insert in the one of jaw parts and extending through the other jaw part. At least one of the jaw parts (64, 66) includes an engagement surface for locking the stanchion (44, 46) to the rail (16) when the retainer (68) has moved the jaws (64, 66) to the closed position. Conversely, the retainer (68) separates engagement surfaces from the longitudinal rail (16) when the jaw parts (64, 66) are moved to an open position, in which the cross rail (48) is displaceable along or removable from the longitudinal rail (16).

Au moins l'un des éléments mâchoire (64, 66) comprend une surface d'engagement pour verrouiller le support (44, 46) sur le rail (16) lorsque l'élément de retenue (68) a déplacé les mâchoires (64, 66) vers la position fermée. Réciproquement, l'élément de retenue (68) sépare les surfaces de contact du rail longitudinal (16) lorsque les éléments mâchoire (64, 66) sont déplacés vers une position ouverte dans laquelle le rail transversal (48) peut être déplacé le long du rail longitudinal (16) ou retiré de ce dernier.
