ABSTRACT An upper portion (10) is pivotingly joined to a lower portion (9) via outer (12) and (14) inner hinge means. A straight line (e) connecting the hinge means forms an angle (.alpha.) with a straight line (b) normal to the longitudinal axis (a') of the shoe or boot, the outer hinge means being shifted toward the toe of the shoe or boot (5) and the inner hinge means toward the heel. By means of this hinge-means arrangement, the upper portion is tiltable obliquely and inwardly forward relative to the lower portion in the direc- tion of a straight line (d). The knee of the wearer moves in the same direction (d) when he modifies his forward-lean- ing stance. In this case, no canting of the sole takes place, nor are any pressure points produced by the upper portion of the shoe or boot on the inside of the wearer's lower leg.
