26930-FF ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The preparation of pharmaceutical powder compositions which are directly compressible into tablets, is disclosed. The disclosed process includes subjecting an aqueous slurry/solution of a pharmaceutically active drug specifically naproxen or naproxen sodium (which slurry may be directly obtained without drying from the synthesis of the drug), alone or in admixture with an aqueous mixture of excipient materials, to a controlled form of spray drying to produce a dry powder of uniform particle size wherein the drug is uniformly dispersed in and coated with the excipients. The powder can be readily combined with additional dry excipient materials and formed into tablets. The process provides for substantial savings in the manufacture of the tablets. The spray dried powder compositions are highly compressible. Utilizing such spray dried powder compositions, the tablets formed are readily dissolvable and also are stable under normal storage conditions and stress conditions of temperature and relative humidity.
