A method and device for isolating volatile compounds from a liquid, in particular but not exclusively blood, uses a spray chamber and a nozzle oriented downwardly which produces a jet of carrier gas and liquid projected onto the bottom wall of the spray chamber. The nozzle reduces the liquid into a mass of droplets from the surface of which the volatile compounds evaporate. A flow of carrier gas transporting the evaporated compounds leaves the spray chamber through an exit port located in the top wall of the chamber. The exit port is therefore located outside the mass of droplets to reduce the amount of liquid in the flow of carrier gas leaving the chamber. The volatile compounds plus carrier gas pass through a jet separator which transmits the volatile compounds to a mass spectrometer for analysis.
