A spring assembly (10) particularly adapted for use in vehicular automatic transmissions comprising a pair of annu- lar plates (12, 14) having a multiplicity of circumferentially spaced, parallel-oriented compression springs (16) mounted therebetween. The annular plates (12, 14) are interconnected at circumferentially spaced points around their periphery so that the compression springs (16) are held in a precom- pressed state. The interconnection means (20, 22, 24) are de- signed so as to permit the overall axial length of the spring assembly (10) to constrict as the springs (16) are compressed. Two alternative embodiments of the present invention are dis- closed: a first embodiment wherein the annular plates (12, 14) are made from stamped sheet metal and a second embod- iment wherein the annular plates (12, 14) are made from in- jected molded plastic.
