ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An actuator has power driven linearly movable piston means for rotating a valve stem, and back-up means for rotating the valve stem. The back-up means includes a rotatable threaded screw, means for coupling a piston to the valve stem, and means for releasably engaging the screw with the coupling means. The coupling means includes a retainer fixed to the piston and slidably receiving the screw, and the engaging means includes a split nut having a threaded portion biassed towards engagement with the screw by a spring.
