ABSTRACT An improved drive assembly for a powered chain saw or the like and an improved method for fabricating same, which drive assembly includes a drive sprocket having a hub portion centrally and presenting a hub extension at one end for coaxially registering within the centered opening of the end wall of a clutch drum, and an apertured reinforcing washer interposed between the tip portions of the sprocket wheel in the region of abutment of the drive sprocket and clutch drum and preferably registering within the recesses of the sprocket teeth so as to present an extended jointing area therebetween for securing the several components against separation; and providing a releaseable interlock between the drive sprocket and the apertured reinforcing washer so as to preliminarily hold same against separation during assembly and prior to commencing the brazing operation or other jointing step and the improved method including the step of first presenting the apertured reinforcing washer to the drive sprocket so as to captivate same for presentation to the associated clutch drum whereupon the brazing step or other mode of attachment can be undertaken.
