ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotary assembly, for example a sprocket wheel rigidly connected to a rotary support member, such as a hub or shaft, is produced by punching axial grooves of limited length on the outer surface of the member from one end of the member. The material displaced from the grooves during punching flows toward the inner end of the grooves to form radially outwardly-directed lugs. The wheel has a central axial opening formed with radially inwardly-directed projects. When the member is located within the central opening, the projections mate with the grooves, the rear axial face of the wheel is seated against the lugs and the end face of the member projects axial- ly in front of the front face of the wheel. The end face of the member is then deformed axially into engagement with the front face of the wheel to lock the wheel on the member.
